• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-22 CONVENIENT PLAYBACK FUNCTIONS ■ APSS (Auto Program Search System) APSS automatically locates the beginning of any track. To move to the beginning of the next track: Press the 4 button during playback. To re-start the track being played: Press the 5 button during playback. To skip a number of tracks at one time, press the 5 or 4 button repeatedly un- til the desired track number is shown. To begin playback at a desired track, press the 5 or 4 button whilst in the stop mode to select the track number. Then press

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-20 PLAYING A MINIDISC 1 Insert the earphones plug firmly into the earphones socket on the remote con- trol unit. 2 Plug the remote control unit into the socket on the main unit. Push the plug all the way in. ● Since the remote control unit plug has only one correct orientation, plug it in as shown in the drawing. 3 Insert a MiniDisc. (See page 9.) ● The power will be turned on automati- cally, and playback will start from the first track. • Sharp MD-SR70H, E-12 RECORDING FROM THE MICROPHONE ■ Recording from the microphone (Mic synchro recording) The recording will begin automatically in response to a noise or a person speaking. When the sound stops, the recording will pause. This function is convenient when recording lectures, conferences, etc. ● Adjust the recording level so that the maximum sound volume from the source makes the reading swing be- tween –4 dB and 0 dB. ● When the recording level display is changed from “MIC H 21” to “MIC L 20”, the sound will be interrupted mo- mentarily. • ■ Types of discs E-8 There are two types of discs: playback-only and recordable discs. ● Playback-only MiniDisc: This type of MiniDisc usually contains commercially available pre-recorded music. This is the same kind of optical disc as CDs. Playback is performed us- ing an optical pickup. (Recording and editing are not possible.) Notes: ● When making important recordings, it is

CONVENIENT OPERATION OF THE UNIT < How to read the battery indicator > ● When the battery is completely discharged, the battery indicator will flash. Recharge the battery or replace the alkaline battery with a new one. ● When the battery has run completely out, “BATT EMPTY” will appear. Then, the power will be disconnected automatically. Even if the battery is not used, you should charge it at least once every three months because of the special quality of this battery. ● The rechargeable battery can be charged approximat

Note: ● The display of the remaining disc time may vary slightly from the actual remain- ing time (page 37). ■ To create your own track numbers whilst recording You can create your own track numbers at special points in a recording, so that these points can easily be found later. At any point where you want to create a track number whilst recording, press the REC button. ● The track number will be written on the disc and the recording will continue un- interrupted. ■ To check the remaining disc time

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-38 ERROR MESSAGES Error messages RemedyMeaning BLANK MD BATT EMPTY ● The battery is run down. ● Charge the rechargeable battery or replace the alkaline battery (or use the AC adaptor for power). ● Nothing is recorded. ● Replace the disc with a recorded disc. Can’t COPY ● No copy can be made because of the SCMS copyright system. ● Record using the analogue cable. Can’t EDIT ● A track cannot be edited. ● Change the stop position of the track and then try editing it. *: Number or Symbol. PL

• Sharp MD-SR70H, ■ Recording from CDs or MDs (Synchro recording) E-9 RECORDING USING THE ANALOGUE CABLE Synchro recording is a method that detects the playback sound from the source equip- ment. When sound is present, it automati- cally starts the recording. When the source is silent, the recording will be paused. ● Adjust the recording level so that the maximum sound volume from the source makes the reading swing somewhere between –4 dB and 0 dB. ● To record from a CD or an MD, first adjust the recording level. Then put the equipment connected to this unit into the playback stand-by mode. 5 Press the ENTER/SYNC button

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-17 ■ To erase tracks To erase all of the tracks at once: 1 Whilst in the stop mode, press the EDIT button to select “ALL ERASE”. ● “ALL ERASE” can also be selected by holding down the EDIT button for at least 2 seconds. 2 Press the ENTER/SYNC button. ● To cancel the operation, press the • ■/:OFF button. 3 Press the ENTER/SYNC button again. ● All of the track numbers, track names, and disc names will be erased. Notes: ● Once a track has been erased, it can- not be recovered. Double-check the track number before erasing it. ● When a track is erased, the numbers as- signed to the tracks following the erased t

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-10 To turn off the power: Press the • ■/:OFF button whilst in the stop mode. ● After the track number has been written on the disc, the power will shut off auto- matically. (For details about the TOC, see page 19.) To remove the MiniDisc: Turn off the power and move the OPEN lever in the direction indicated by the arrow. Recordings can not be made in the following situations: ● Recording on a playback-only MiniDisc (commercially available music). ● If a MiniDisc is protected against ac- cidental erasu

To silence the “beep” sound, do the follow- ing: 1 Whilst in the stop mode ... Hold down the MODE button until “SET UP” appears. ● When you release the button, “BEEP ON” will appear. 2 Press the MODE button. ● “BEEP OFF” will appear, and the con- firmation sound will disappear. ● To restore the confirmation sound, se- lect “BEEP ON”. 3 Press the • ■/:OFF button. ● The normal display will reappear. ■ To cancel the auto-play function When a MiniDisc is inserted, the power will be turned

Caution: ● All of the tracks that follow the newly re- corded track will be erased. 1 During playback, press the 06 button at the point where you want to begin re- recording. 2 Press the REC button. ● To cancel the operation, press the • ■/:OFF button. 3 Press the ENTER/SYNC button. ● All of the tracks and track names will be erased, following the point where the playback is paused. 4 Press the 06 bu

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-19 ABOUT THE TOC The TOC (an abbreviation for Table of Con- tents) is information about the track num- bers and recorded areas that allow the unit to find musical selections or sounds. The entire MD is controlled by the information in this TOC, which enables the unit to find the beginning of a track quickly or to record automatically in a vacant area. ● The TOC is recorded in a specific area on a MiniDisc, which is not used for sound recording. ■ About TOC recording When you start recording or editing, “TOC” will appear in the display. This indicates that information in the TOC

There are different cables and connections for each type of recording, depending on the sockets on the equipment being con- nected to the unit. (1) Analogue recording Connect the unit to equipment that has a line output socket using the analogue cable included with this unit. ● Main equipment: CD player, MD player, radio cassette player, etc. ● Cable required: Analogue cable included with this unit. (2) Digital recording Connect the

• Sharp MD-SR70H, E-5 POWER SOURCE This unit can be used with the following power sources: a rechargeable battery, an AC adaptor, a commercially available alkaline battery, and a separately available car adaptor (AD-CA20X). ■ Rechargeable battery power When the rechargeable battery is used for the first time or when you want to use it after a long period of disuse, be sure to charge it fully. 1 Open the battery cover. ● Slide the battery cover as far as it will go to the outside and then lift to open it. If the battery cover is lifted without be- ing slid all the way out, it may break. 2 Insert the rechargeable battery according to the polarity marked o
